TIME TO PLAY

Puppet Master 2 (1991)

What do I see at night
when I wake from sleep?
A puppet coming alive,
on the shelf in my room.
It creaks.
It groans.
Its head spins around.
It can’t be real.
It’s a wooden puppet.
No one to pulls its strings.
Until it speaks.
In a deep voice.
It can’t be alive.
Until it says,
“Time to play.”
I run to the door.
It can’t be.
It’s standing before me.
Taller than me.
Arms reaching to me.
A gleam in its black eyes.
It can’t be.
But it is.
It’s alive.

SEND IN THE CLOWNS

Daniel Merriam

I open my eyes.
I see circus men.
Why are they in my bedroom?
Soft laughter fills the room.
Clowns are waving knives at me.
I need to escape.
I can’t.
I’m tied to my bed.
They’re coming closer.
The laughter is getting louder.
I close my eyes.
All is quiet.
My eyes open.
The room is dark.
And empty.
I glance over at my chair.
A red balloon is tied to it.
Floating in the air.
Oh no.

A BEDROOM

Blankets of Flowers

A BEDROOM
Cover me with blankets of flowers.
Shelter me with petals of pink.
Sheets of softest green.
A canopy of leaves.
A bedroom of luxury.
None can compare.
